The Central Mining Institute – National Research Institute (GIG-PIB) is a restructured R&D organisation supervised by the Ministry of State Assets, with 95 years of experience in mining and environmental engineering. GIG-PIB supports industry, public administration and international partners. In GI-mine, GIG-PIB contributes strong expertise from departments covering Mining Aerology, Water Protection, Risk Assessment & Industrial Safety, and Underground Research, delivering applied research and services for operating mines and mines under closure.

Polska Grupa Górnicza (PGG) is Poland’s key coal producer and one of the largest mining companies in the EU, operating seven mining branches and five auxiliary plants and employing 39,000+ staff. PGG focuses on efficiency, environmental standards and occupational health and safety, with investments targeting innovation and modernisation. In GI-mine, PGG provides real-world industrial context and pathways for implementation, scale-up and impact in operating mining environments.

TUBAF University of Freiberg

TU Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF), Freiberg, Germany (tu-freiberg.de)

Founded in 1765, TUBAF is the world’s longest continuously operating mining university and a leading hub for geo-resources, mining, metallurgy and interdisciplinary environmental research. It integrates engineering, materials science and economics, supported by a large scientific and technical workforce and strong third-party funding. In GI-mine, TUBAF strengthens the consortium with advanced research infrastructure and cross-disciplinary expertise relevant to mining systems and environmental performance.

UniOvi University of Oviedo

University of Oviedo (UNIOVI), Oviedo, Spain (uniovi.es)

A centre of excellence for research on mineral resources and the environment, located in Asturias, Spain’s main coal region. The School covers geology, mining, processing plants, materials, energy, environment and risk/investment assessment, supported by 25 research laboratories and 50+ researchers. It has a strong collaboration record with HUNOSA and extensive experience in RFCS and EU projects, including MERIDA, RECOVERY, DD-MET and POTENTIALS.

Poznań University of Life Sciences

Poznań University of Life Sciences (PULS) - Faculty of Environmental and Mechanical Engineering (FEME), Poznań, Poland (up.poznan.pl)

Poznań University of Life Sciences (founded 1919) is among Poland’s leading agricultural and environmental universities. FEME specialises in post-mining soil development, reclamation and revitalisation, and the use of waste materials in reclamation and landfill restoration. The team runs Poland’s long-term static field experiment on agricultural reclamation of brown-coal post-mining areas (established 1978) and conducts research on plant stress responses in industrial and urban environments.
